The Tones of Mandarin Chinese

Follow Ben on Twitter:

Mandarin Chinese uses the Pinyin system to spell out Chinese words with English letters. The tone marks are then added above the vowels.

Tone 1: ¯
Tone 2: ´
Tone 3: ˇ
Tone 4: `

So when words are written with tone markers they look like this:

Mā, má, mǎ, mà
Bā, bá, bǎ, bà
