Secretary Mattis says new strategy will bring victory in Afghanistan

Defense Secretary Mattis painted a grim picture of the situation in Afghanistan.

He also threw in a little hope for the future.

The defense secretary told Congress there was a new Afghanistan strategy in the works.

“We are not winning in Afghanistan right now, and we will correct this as soon as possible” Mattis said.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) wanted to know when the strategy would be available—different than the prevailing strategy of “don’t lose.”

Mattis assured the senator that there would be details ready by mid-July.

Mattis spent most of his time asking for more money for the military.

He called for a lifting of budget caps, and the passing of the president’s budget.

He also asked for provisions to ensure that the military budget would not be cut in the future.
