Berkeley Police Arrest 13 Antifa Extremists for Assault

By Bowen Xiao

Police have arrested 13 protesters who took place in the violence during demonstrations in Berkeley on Sunday.

Amid the protests on Aug. 27, black-clad members of far-left extremist group Antifa attacked several peaceful right-wing protesters, according to the Daily Caller.

Berkeley police said the 13 suspects were arrested on suspicion of multiple offenses, such as assault with a deadly weapon, felony assault, and violating the Berkeley Municipal Code, CBS San Francisco reported.

The 13 suspects arrested were thought to be part of the extremist group.

Despite the canceling of a “No to Marxism” rally at the Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park, over 4000 people—predominantly leftists and Antifa members—still showed up to disrupt.

Many from the crowd chanted slogans such as “No Trump, no wall, no USA at all.”

The protesters also started a separate demonstration that took place on the UC Berkeley campus to allegedly “rally against hate.”

According to a news release from Berkeley, the ages of the 13 arrested suspects ranged between 20 to 47-years old. They also said that most of the suspects were from Berkeley and Oakland.

One officer was injured while arresting a violent protester and several other officers were hit with paint. In total, six people were injured amid the bursts of violence and two of them were transported to local hospitals for treatment according to a Berkeley City statement.

All of the 13 suspects arrested were identified, Berkeley Police department said. Their names are below:

Vasquez, Seth 25 year old male from Berkeley
Misohink, Mark 23 year old male from Berkeley
Dominic, James 23 year old male from Oakland
Wyrick, Kristopher 39 year old male from Alpine

Dougan, Sean 47 year old male from Portland, OR

In an earlier public service announcement, Berkeley issued a warning to residents to distance themselves from the violence.

“If you are at a demonstration and you see violence, separate yourself. Keep a distance from violence. If you can do so safely, report it to police,” the post reads.

The city said its “the best way to keep yourself and others safe” and it allows police to focus on catching criminals.

“Don’t get baited by provocateurs. The best way to deny them the attention they seek is to not engage and avoid such events entirely,” the statement reads.

To avoid another widely violent brawl like the one in Charlottesville, Berkeley Police worked with Berkeley Fire Department, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, a variety of city staff, and Law Enforcement Mutual Aid partners to protect the peaceful expression of freedom of speech.
