Several incidents have been explained by things like a jet breaking through the sound barrier (sonic boom) or an exploding asteroid. About 90 percent, however, lack an explanation.

One of the recent booms was reported on Nov. 20 at around 9 p.m. in Lochbuie, Colorado.

“[O]ur officers were notified of a suspicious sound, described as a ‘loud boom’ that shook multiple houses, coming from the northwest side of Lochbuie. At this time, the origin of the sound is unknown,” Lochbuie Police Department stated on Facebook.

Lochbuie sits just 7 miles north of Denver International Airport and less than 20 miles north of the Buckley Air Force Base. That would support the possibility that a sonic boom from a military jet caused the noise.

But Lochbuie Police Chief Tracey McCoy said he’s never heard a call like this in his six years with the department, KUSA reported.

A loud boom was also heard in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley in Idaho on Nov. 15 at around 11 p.m., The Lewiston Tribune reported.

The paper contacted Mountain Home Air Force Base in southern Idaho and Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane, but neither reported aircraft in the area and didn’t know what caused the boom.

The paper tried the National Weather Service at Spokane but a spokesperson said no weather events that could have caused the noise were reported in the area.

Ammunition manufacturers in the area didn’t have any explosions at their facilities, local law enforcement reported.

Loud sounds coming from the sky with no apparent source have been dubbed “skyquakes” and they’re not limited to booms. Sometimes the sounds resemble the dramatic horn-like sound effects from sci-fi movies.

Regardless of their origin, many people found the sounds disturbing. All the more so because of their inexplicable nature.
