Steelers’ Ryan Shazier Carted Off Field After Scary Injury

By Jack Phillips

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier suffered a scary injury during Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals and had to be carted off the field.

He collided with Cincinnati Bengals receiver Josh Malone in the first quarter. He was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center after the incident with a back injury.

His injury won’t “require surgery at this time, and he continues to improve,” Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said in a statement. The team said it hopes that he’ll return to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL Network reported that he suffered a “spinal contusion.”

After he attempted a tackle, Shazier reached for the middle of his back and remained down on the field. He was then strapped onto a stretcher and was put in on a cart.

Kinkhabwala reported that he was rushed to a hospital via an ambulance after that.

“This is a tough game, tough business,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said, according to SBNation. “5-0 (Shazier) is our brother.”

“Right now we’re just happy he’s getting the necessary medical attention he deserves,” Tomlin told ESPN. “We got a lot of brothers in there who are thoughtful about him, and want to honor that performance for him.”
