The real cost of getting a dog is more than just the dog’s purchase price—long-term costs need to be considered as well.
GOBankingRates conducted a study to find out which 30 breeds are the most expensive dogs to own. Factors that were considered included the dog’s purchase price, grooming expenses, and potential health care costs for common issues faced by the breed.
The most expensive breed is the Tibetan Mastiff, with a high average purchase price of $3,000. Tibetan Mastiffs also have high grooming costs and expensive common medical issues such as hip dysplasia.
Black Russian Terriers are second, with Portuguese Water Dogs, Irish Wolfhounds, and Golden Retrievers rounding out the top five.
