Photo of College Graduate Carrying AR-10 on Campus Goes Viral

By Zack Stieber

A picture of a college graduate carrying a rifle on her college’s campus has gone viral.

“Now that I graduated from Kent State, I can finally arm myself on campus. I should have been able to do so as a student- especially since 4 unarmed students were shot and killed by the government on this campus,” Kaitlin Bennett wrote in a Twitter post on May 13.

The post has gone viral, with tens of thousands of people liking it and thousands of people commenting.

Bennett said that the post was in support of policies that allow students to carry guns on campuses.

Kent State University, though, has a policy against students, faculty, and other staff members carrying any “deadly weapons” on campus. “Deadly weapon” includes firearms, explosive devices, and other dangerous ordinances, the university stated.

While some believe Bennett violated that policy, a university spokesman told Fox 8 that once she graduated she was “no longer restricted under the policy as a student.”

Mansfield said Bennett reached out to university officials before the picture was taken and notified them of her intention.

“Kent State University was recently ranked the safest big college campus in Ohio and 25th safest in the country, according to the National Council for Home Safety and Security. The university has a full-time, certified police force of more than 30 sworn officers who protect the campus. These officers are visible, well-trained and on duty 24/7 in support of students, staff, and faculty,” the spokesman said in a statement.

Some Twitter users hit out at Bennett, but she said in a follow-up post that she didn’t believe she did anything wrong.

“I have no apologies for my graduation photos. As a woman, I refuse to be a victim & the second amendment ensures that I don’t have to be,” she said.

In another post, she took aim at people who categorized her AR-10 as an “assault rifle,” noting that it “fires at the same rate as any modern pistol.”

Kent State University is in Ohio, in the town of Kent.
