According to the latest research of the Gallup Poll, over 22 million Mainland Chinese
want to immigrate to the United States, far more than any other ethnicity in the world. Analysts believe the actual number even surpasses 22 million. But due to various limitations, many are not able.
One of the many reasons Chinese
mainlanders want to leave China is a lack of a sense of security living under the current rule by the Chinese Communist Party.
A citizen from the Guangdong province, Mr. Tang, also wants to immigrate as well, mainly because of China’s one party
dictatorship and rampant corruption.
[Mr. Tang, Citizen of Guangdong]:
“China is a dictatorship. People don’t have a sense of security. One day a piece of property belongs to you, but tomorrow it’s his, not yours anymore. Local authorities take farmers’ land and sell them to developers. Farmers don’t have any land, and they don’t feel a sense of security. Just in Guangdong alone, the suicide rate is over 20,000 per year.”
Rights activist Liu Feiyue
also believes Mainlanders who want to immigrate to the U.S. or other countries could possibly surpass 20 million. One of the main reasons, he says, is that human rights
are not respected and laws are not enforced.
[Liu Feiyue, Rights Activist]:
“If so many citizens of a country are racing to leave, to go to other countries, this reveals that problems have surfaced in the country. It shows that due to various reasons nobody wants to stay there, and they are unable to stay. A society without freedom, justice, of course, this society has lost its cohesiveness.”
Another survey conducted jointly by China Merchants Bank and Bain & Company show that 60% of China’s middle class people with more than 10 million RMB worth of investment assets have already finished immigration
procedures or are considering this process.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in 2011 a total of 2969 Chinese citizens applied for EB-5 immigrant investor visas, a 10 fold increase compared to 2007, making up a total of 75% of all EB-5 applicants.
