· 2008– : Vice Premier of the PRC (Government position)

· 2012– : CCP Secretary of Chongqing Municipality (Party position)

Zhang Dejiang replaced Bo Xilai as Party Secretary of Chongqing in March 2012, after Bo’s suspension from that post. Zhang is also one of four vice premiers of the People’s Republic of China (i.e. the government).

From 2002–2007, Zhang Dejiang was Party Secretary of Guangdong province, preceding Wang Yang. Although Zhang worked to build up the economy there, he was a political hardliner. Zhang was known for suppressing freedom of the press, labor unions, and anti-government protests.

Zhang Dejiang is a possible candidate for the Politburo Standing Committee at the November 2012 18th Party Congress.

Factional Alliance

Zhang Dejiang is loyal to Jiang Zemin’s faction. Jiang’s faction stands in opposition to Hu Jintao’s faction amidst the current bitter power struggle. More info in this video.
