This bride’s father passed away before she met the love of her life. Her dad was always there for her growing up, and she wishes he could have met her husband-to-be. Knowing how much she loved her father, the groom made sure to honor his memory during their wedding in the most beautiful way.
When Shannon married Don, someone very important in her life was not present at the wedding—her father. He had been diagnosed with cancer and had passed away a month later.
Without him, the wedding traditions of both the father walking the bride down the aisle and having the father-daughter dance were sadly missing.
Don knew how much Shannon loved her father, and his absence left a hole in her heart. So, the groom wanted to do something special for her, and he came up with an idea to honor Shannon’s father and have him be a part of the wedding in some way.
While Don and Shannon danced to “At Last” together at the reception, the music cut abruptly. Shannon looked around, puzzled, and found one of Don’s sons bringing a chair over to her. Don then gestured for her to take a seat.
Guests started to cheer as everyone realized they were about to be treated to a surprise performance.
Don and his two sons, Tommy and Joey, stood in the center of the dance floor and started dancing to Bruno Mars’s “Just The Way You Are.” Don lip-synced the song to his new bride, bringing tears to her eyes.
And when the song was over, Shannon thought that was it, but she was wrong.
Don followed up with a lovely gesture, to the melodies of “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, as he took a seat across from her and held up placards of the first few verses of the song, which read:
When your legs don’t work like they used to before
And I can’t sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks
Then, Don changed up the lyrics in his final placard:
And darling I will be loving you ’til “infinity”
But Don wasn’t done yet—there was still one last, special deed to be done.
While facing his back to her, he donned a T-shirt with the words “May I have this dance?” written on the back, all while Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s “Over The Rainbow” played in the background. When Don turned around, Shannon saw her dad’s face on the front side of the shirt.
Don wanted Shannon to have the father-daughter dance she always dreamed of, and in a way, he made it happen.
“When he turned it into the daddy-daughter dance that I had always dreamed about with my dad, I lost it,” Shannon told HuffPost.
Visible tears of joy streamed down her face as they held each other closely.
After a few turns around the dance floor, Don removed the T-shirt, took Shannon in his arms again to finish their dance to “At Last,” and both bride and groom were beaming, laughing and shedding tears of joy.
