It was love at first sight for this couple when they met online, both at the age of 32. After they became an item, one of their parents dug out a faded old photo, and they saw something that stunned both of them in their tracks.
Looking for love online, Amy Giberson and Justin Pounders were paired on Match.com, an online dating website, when they were both in their early thirties. Justin had come across Amy’s photo and was immediately attracted to her.
“I saw her photo and for whatever reason, was instantly drawn to her,” he told PEOPLE. “She just had this great energy, you could tell. I can’t explain it, but I knew I had to get to know this girl.”
He messaged her, and the two started texting and calling each other every night. After a while, they decided to meet in person for the first time.
“When I first saw him, I felt that I was staring at the man I was going to marry,” Giberson said. “When we met up and we hugged, it was like I had known him my whole life.”
For the new couple, it almost seemed, somehow, as if they had known each other before, in another lifetime perhaps, or from the distant past. Indeed, there was a fortuitous connection. Amy recalled something Justin had told her:
“We were in the car and Justin casually mentioned that he loved my name because he had had a crush on a girl named Amy in his preschool,” Amy said. “Then I joked to him, ‘Well, it’s not me, so I don t want to hear about her!’”
But when they learned that they had actually attended at the same preschool at the same time, when they were children, they were on the verge of coming to an incredible conclusion. But they still weren’t sure, so they asked their parents to dig up their old preschool photos to resolve the matter. Justin’s mom was the first to produce evidence of their childhood identities.
“Justin’s mom found a photo of the two of us together and I just started crying, I was ecstatic. I was the Amy he had liked all those years ago!” Amy said. “It was definitely meant to be.”
Amy and Justin had formed a childhood romance when they were just 3 years old at Sunshine Preschool in St. Petersburg, Florida. Even though three decades had passed, the preschool’s former owner and teacher, Diane Twar, still remembered the children’s “love story.”
“They had a blast with each other,” Twar recalled. “It was a quiet, bashful romance. They liked each other from afar, it was a young love, like a sweet crush, you know? They insisted on sitting next to each other in our school picture.”
Amy shared: “We’ve been so close to finding each other this whole time but didn’t until the time was right. And that’s now.”
“It was meant to be,” Justin added.
