After he lost his legs, skateboarding set him free—now he is a professional skateboarder!

This man became a professional skateboarder despite having his legs amputated. He is an inspiration for everyone, showing how to live without complaints or regrets.

They say that happiness comes from within. This is a great proverb, although it’s not easy putting this wisdom into practice. It’s hard for most people because many of us look outside for a source of happiness. People seek out better jobs, pursue a lovely relationship or a nice car to give them the happiness they long for. While it can be hard to feel happiness from within, imagine how hard it would be if you lost your legs in an accident? Surprisingly enough, there are people who have discovered happiness, despite the serious hardships they face in their lives. A great example is Ítalo Fernandes de Lima, known as Italo Romano. He is 27 years old and lives in Curitiba, Brazil.

A defining moment in his life happened on a camping trip with his friends when he was 11 years old. The group took a bus to a city nearby and then they walked another 30 miles. The trip was very tiring, they spent the whole night walking, took a rest at around 5 am and woke up after just one hour of sleep. At one moment Italo separated himself from the group and needed to catch up with his friends.

At one moment Italo separated himself from the group and needed to catch up with his friends. Unfortunately, he had the worst idea on how to do it. “I then saw this train coming and thought it would be better if I grabbed it, so I would catch up with my friends faster,” said Italo. “When the train got closer, I jumped on a ladder outside it, but ended up being caught under the wheels.”

The train dragged him for 10 meters. When Italo’s group leader saw him, he started to run after him and tried to reach out to him. “When he grabbed my hand, he pulled me with all his force. But the wheel was on top of my leg. So he pulled even harder. It was then that the train cut my legs. He put me on a bench. I could see him crying but I couldn’t understand why. I hadn’t realized that I had lost my legs,” said Italo. Unfortunately, it was too late to save his legs, “I lost my left leg at the moment of the accident. My right leg was still there but totally crushed. It was beyond repair.”

When leaving the hospital Italo was given a wheelchair, but as he was very nimble and agile before the accident, he felt limited on the wheelchair. Italo wanted to be independent and didn’t want to rely on others. That is when he saw a documentary about a disabled skater Og de Souza. He immediately felt inspired by skateboarding. “I borrowed my cousin’s board and as soon as I got on it and moved I felt free. From then on I’ve only used a skateboard. I wasn’t planning anything. I just wanted to do what made me happy and that was skateboarding. I taught myself all the moves and after

The way Italo found freedom in skateboarding is inspiring enough, but even more extraordinary is his attitude towards life. As Italo’s mother said, “I have my two legs. I’m normal. And I complain much more than he does. He never complains. Even when it’s hot like today and he spends so much time on the skateboard, he gets blisters and calluses on his hands. But he never complains. […] He’s a very positive person, very joyful. He is a great example of overcoming and I take my hat off to him.” Moreover, Italo claims that the accident made him look at life from a different angle, “If the accident hadn’t happened, I would probably be into drugs or dead. Afterward, my life changed completely. I started to see things with different eyes.”

As we can see Italo is a great example on how to find a source of happiness from within, how passion can change a person for the better and that even the worst tragedies have a meaning. He lives his life to the fullest and doesn’t hold any resentment. He enjoys everyday moments spent with his daughter and has a dream about going to the Paralympic Games if in the future there would be a skateboarding category, for which he is sure he would bring a medal home.
