Can a really simple invention make a big difference in people’s lives? The answer is YES! People living in extremely hot climates without air conditioning may certainly benefit from this ingenious contraption. All you need is a few recycled plastic bottles, a sharp knife, and a piece of cardboard. It doesn’t get much simpler than this!
Living in a tin hut in Daulatdia, Bangladesh, where in summer temperatures can soar above 45 degrees Celsius (113º F), with no running water, sounds like a nightmare. But that is how over 28,000 people exist in this small area, mostly living in cramped conditions. This means that half the day is so unbearably hot, they cannot work.
Thankfully, two companies, Grey Dhaka together with Grameen Intel, have created the world’s first electricity-free air conditioner, made with nothing besides recycled plastic bottles and cardboard—anyone can make it in fact. It’s free to make and the effect is immediate.
The way it works is simple and ingenious. First, the bottle bottoms are cut off; then the bottles are inserted neck-first into a series of holes cut into a stiff piece of cardboard. Hot air enters from the wide part of the bottle and is then funneled through the neck of the bottle, which cools the air as it enters the building.
“After initial tests, blueprints of the Eco-Cooler were put up online for everyone to download for free. Raw materials are easily available, therefore, making Eco-Coolers a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly solution,” said Syed Gousul Alam Shaon, managing partner and chief creative officer at Grey Dhaka.
The board, with bottles affixed, is then positioned where the air can enter; over a window for instance. Immediate cooling of the air coming through can be felt, and it can lower the temperature by as much as 5 degrees Celsius (10º F).
For someone living in a hot house, that can make a world of difference.
This simple idea has the potential to improve the health and quality of life in the community, and with little or no cost. An ingenious invention designed to be simple and easy!
