When Jake Coates found out that Emmy Collett, the woman he loved, only had a few months to live due to cancer, he knew that it was now or never—he married Emmy, and here’s their story.
Jake and Emmy’s love story began when they were both just 11 years old. Though they saw each other as friends in the beginning, years of close contact blossomed into a full-fledged romance by the time they were 16.
Unfortunately, three years later, they had to separate for further studies. But the love they had for each other never really died.
And 10 years later, both Jake and Emmy admitted having always been in love with one another. And with this, they entered the mature stage of their relationship.
Jake had even set up a holidaying trip to the Philippines, where he was planning to propose to Emmy. But all those plans were shattered when she suddenly fell ill and the hospital checkup revealed that she was suffering from thyroid cancer.
Emmy had contracted a rare type of cancer. In fact, she was one of the only 300 such cases in the United Kingdom over the past 12 years. And living with the disease was horrible, as she had to go through many troubles to lead a normal life.
“I was needing to empty my bowel every 15 minutes day and night which was having a severe impact on my quality of life,” Emmy said when writing about her health on her blog, reports The Sun.
“It was explained to us that my longstanding bowel problems were due to the extremely high level of the hormone, calcitonin, secreted from the cancer cells,” she added.
But Emmy’s terrible condition never reduced Jake’s feelings for her.
He eventually proposed to her over a cup of tea and they got married last year, with friends and family cheering the couple.
Emmy succumbed to the illness in June 2017. But her cheerful outlook throughout her battle is one of the things that Jake will always remember.
“You have inspired so many and given so many people the hope and strength they have needed to continue on in the darkest of times. You are and always will be the biggest inspiration to me. I love you angel. Now and always,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
And even though their story does have a tragic ending, the spirit of love and commitment that Jake and Emmy demonstrated throughout their relationship will always be something everyone can take inspiration from.
“Emmy was truly remarkable. Her bravery unmatched, her determination unswerving, her kindness, beauty and caring nature unparalleled. She was one in a billion,” Jake wrote.
