In the insurgency torn region of Bastar, the inhabitants lead a tough life sandwiched between the military forces and the Maoists. Each time the CRPF come to raid the village it’s a tense atmosphere. They have a bad reputation in the village with past cases of assault but a 27-year-old female is changing things for the better both for the CRPF and the villagers!
Usha Kiran, the only female in her battalion is bringing a smile on the villagers faces by giving them a comforting shoulder. She is the assistant commanding officer of the 80th battalion. She did her training with the 232 Mahila Battalion after which Kiran was determined to serve under the male battalion in insurgency hit states, Jammu & Kashmir or the North East. None of the three places she chose was easy!
Serving in Bastar now, Usha accompanies her battalion during the raid. Her presence eases the distressed atmosphere in the village as she makes it a point to interact with the villagers. “Her presence is good as the tribal women are always terrified and worried during the operations,” said a villager to Hindustan Times.
Her father and grandfather were ex-personnel of the force, Usha is not new to their ways. “..I preferred to come to Naxal-hit Bastar because tribals are innocents and development is not happening because of Maoist violence,” she said.
Not only is she helping the villagers relax, she is also inspiring the women of the village to join the forces. Usha also helps the school children of the area in their studies.
Usha Kiran has not only showcased her strength by opting for the turbulent region but she has also a exemplified a great way to bond with the villagers. It is important for the forces to keep a check on the villages but the same thing can be done with a little more compassion towards the people residing in those areas!
