There’s a Fascinating Reason This Fruit Smells Like Total Garbage

The durian always draws looks, especially when people start to smell it.

The tropical fruit is especially popular in Southeast Asia, noted Healthline.

It’s distinguished by its large size and spiky, hard shell.

But when people break open the fruit, the horrible smell quickly becomes apparent.

The uniquely bad smell comes from 50 discrete compounds in the fruit, according to the German Research Center for Food Chemistry. A study reported by the Smithsonian noted that the compounds included eight that hadn’t been detected in durians before and four compounds that had been completely unknown to science.

The research showed that the smell likely comes from the mixture of the different compounds.
