The New South Wales Rural Fire Service said 900 of its personnel were fighting 48 fires across the most populous Australian state early on April 15.
The service said it had assigned 500 firefighters to a fast-moving bushfire threatening homes in southeast Sydney near Holsworthy and Menai. The fires have been burning since Saturday, April 14, and have already destroyed over 1,000 hectares of bushland in that area.
This footage shows flames encroaching on Menai homes.
The fire service has urged residents to take shelter as the fire approached, and to defend their homes from the fire if they are able.
