The Humboldt penguins at the Oregon Zoo left their nest on Wednesday and hit the pool for the first time, the zoo said.
Humboldt penguins live along the west coasts of Peru and Chile and are named after the cold Humboldt Current that runs from the Antarctic to the equator along the west coast of South America, according to the zoo.
Humboldt penguins spend lots of time in the water, primarily looking for fish, and can spend over 150 hours in the water at a time. They can reach speeds of up to 30 miles an hour and typically stay within 200 feet of the surface.
