Daily Meditation Can Improve Your Health

A Harvard study found that clearing our minds for at least 15 minutes a day can help improve the prevention of certain stresses that worsen our health.

Scientists at Harvard University led the study, which was published in “Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine” in April.

The study indicated that people who meditated over an eight-week period had a big change in the expression of 172 genes, reported WBUR.

Those genes regulate a number of important functions in our bodies, such as circadian rhythms and glucose metabolism.

The change in the expression of the genes was linked to a marked decrease in the blood pressure of the people who meditated.

“This is a major step to overcome the innate bias that has developed in medicine over the last hundred years or so. Going back to penicillin in the 1920s, we have been inexorably dependent on medication, surgery, and procedures,” said Dr. Herbert Benson, a co-author of the study.

“Breaking the train of everyday thought has a medical application that has to be integrated with our marvelous drugs and surgeries.”
