Imagine how it would feel to be stood up at a restaurant on your birthday—how hurtful and upsetting that would be! When this elderly fellow’s family didn’t show up for his 61st birthday, he turned to strangers to fill the void. How amazing that they made his sad day so memorable!
This 61-year-old man showed up early to celebrate his birthday at a restaurant with his family. Excitedly, he started to garnish the tables’ festivity with decorations, streamers, and party hats while waiting for his guests to arrive. He moved tables together, as apparently he was expecting a good number to show, and placed the birthday cake in the middle.
He then sat down and waited for his family. But after having waited for a long while, he got a message on his cellphone, and a look of plain disappointment crossed his face—it seemed his family members were not coming after all to wish him a happy birthday.
The guests in the restaurant took notice and wondered what was the matter.
But, the man decided to make the best of an unhappy situation; rather than packing up all the party decorations, he stood up and in a loud voice, so all could hear him, he said: “Please excuse me, but can I have your attention? Today is my birthday, I’m turning 61-years-old and I wanted to celebrate with my family. I’ve been waiting for my children and grandchildren, but nobody has come.”
He became a little emotional. Then he added: “Anyone who wants to can come sit with me and celebrate my birthday. I would also be forever grateful for a little birthday song.”
It seemed that more than a few diners were in the mood to join the man for his birthday bash, for some singing, as well as for some cake. There were also plenty of hugs to go around!
Although his family didn’t show, it seemed this fellow was able to count on the goodness of strangers to fill the empty seats … and indeed that vacant spot in his heart!
What could have turned out to be a sad day turned out to be one of his most memorable moments!
