Ecstatic dad posts photo of newborn and his wife online—then 8 hours later, tragedy unfolds

A woman who survived heart transplant surgery gave birth to a baby girl seven years later. Soon after the child’s birth, the joyful father posted on Instagram a picture of his wife holding their newborn and shared that the mother’s new heart was still functioning perfectly. Little did he anticipate the bitter irony of what was to follow, just eight hours later.

When Megan Moss Johnson, a Missouri native, was 15, she contracted a virus that developed into myocarditis—an inflammation of the heart muscle.

In 2010, she was given a new lease on life after receiving a new heart.

“I am extremely grateful for her gift,” Megan wrote on her blog.

A year after the transplant, she married her then-husband, Christian music artist Nathan Johnson.

In 2016, she became pregnant, and doctors were convinced she would remain in good health, despite the perils of having a new heart.

And on June 27, 2017, at 2:40 a.m., the 31-year-old Megan gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Eilee.

Nathan took to Instagram to announce the joyful event. He wrote, “Happy Birthday Eilee Kate Johnson. Megan was/is a professional and feels great. Her heart worked perfectly the whole time and Eilee introduced herself quickly and smooth. I am a rich man!!!”

“They were just so happy. Eilee is so beautiful,” said Nathan’s Christian singer bandmate Josh Wilson, according to MailOnline.

But sadly, Nathan’s happiness was short-lived. In a tragic turn of events, Megan started experiencing complications at around 9 or 10 a.m. that same day and passed away an hour later, around 11 a.m., just eight hours after delivering Eilee.

Doctors are unsure what caused her death, as Wilson told the Tennessean. However, as stated on American Heart Association’s website, “Women who’ve had a transplant could have complications during pregnancy.”

“Nathan was devastated,” Wilson wrote on the GoFundMe page that he created for the family. “There are no words for this, so I won’t really say much more.”

“Of course his baby girl is a wonderful gift, so there is a lot of joy, but then there is the deepest kind of sorrow because of Megan,” said Wilson, as PEOPLE reported.

After Megan’s passing, friends and loved ones rallied behind Nathan. They offered to help him run errands, cut the grass, change the baby’s diapers, and run food, CBN reported.

Meanwhile, donations raised via the GoFundMe page reached $330,168 in just one day. After five months’ time, $425,556 had been collected, surpassing their $400,000 goal.

Megan, a passionate advocate of organ donation, once told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “I never thought about being an organ donor until I needed one. It can save lives. It saved mine. It’s the gift of life.”

“Her organs are going to save over 50 lives,” Wilson told CNN.

Rest in peace, Megan. You will forever be remembered by your husband, Nathan, your daughter, Eilee, as well as the over 50 organ recipients who received your “gift of life.”
