Brave baby rhino that tried protecting his mom from poachers expected to make full recovery

The majestic creatures of Africa—rhinos, apes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and giraffes—are a treasure for all of humanity and are not on the market for trade. This is a story of a courageous baby rhino calf that fronted up to poachers in an effort to defend his mother.

Meet Arthur, a brave baby rhino with a “butterfly spirit.” Being a strong yet gentle little rhino, he has been making great progress after a traumatic start in his young life.

When he was only 4 weeks old, he and his mother were attacked on May 20 in the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

A marauding group of machete-swinging poachers had apparently killed his mother in front of him. During the attack, judging by the calf’s machete wounds, he fronted up bravely.

Unfortunately, his valiant efforts to protect his mother were no match for the poachers, and he was severely hacked on his foot and back.

The trauma the baby rhino must have gone through by witnessing his mother’s death cannot be expressed in words.

Michelle Potgieter, a rhino sanctuary volunteer, said, “Baby rhinos commonly die from emotional trauma rather than wounds‚ especially when they are separated from their mother.”

Arthur needed to be in expert hands if he was going to pull through, so Michelle spearheaded the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary initiative to provide the proper care for the orphaned calf.

Michelle said, “Arthur required tender loving care‚ a gentle touch and an expert wound specialist to nurse him to health in a safe‚ secret, and private rehabilitation environment.”

Liz Wilson-Chandler entered the sanctuary as a professional nurse specializing in wound care.

Liz also happened to belong to Gift of the Givers, which is an outstanding non-profit relief organization based in South Africa. The team worked around the clock to find the necessary support and funding for Arthur, which included medical and specialized care.

Thankfully, Arthur is now in the best of hands in a nurturing environment. Although his recovery is slow, Michelle says she is optimistic that Arthur will pull through.

“He is jumping and playing around so it shows he is getting better, it’s a process though.”

Way to go, little one!

Watch the video below:

At only a month old little Arthur has already endured so much trauma in his very short life, but since arriving at #CareforWildRhinoSanctuary both his physical and emotional wellbeing have been improving every day.He is a small but confident little rhino, and we can already tell he is going to be a strong and cheeky bull! He loves his time in the sun, and is starting to show his playful side. He especially enjoys fighting with his tyre! His wounds and his soul are healing, although he still calls very softly in the night for his mom. He is comforted by his caretakers and his warm bottles of milk, and soon settles down to sleep.Although we are still concerned about the wound to his foot, he is walking well and has his dressings changed regularly to prevent infection that could cause long term damage. We are so proud of this little fighter.#CFWRS #CareforWild #ArthurTheBrave #ArthurTheRhino
