Before her terminally ill father passed away, a woman fulfilled a lifelong dream to have a father-daughter dance and filmed it. Two days later, her father was gone; it would be another three years before she shared footage of that moment for friends and family to see.
Lynn Parnell, of Cornelius, North Carolina, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003 and spent more than a decade battling the terminal disease. In May 2015, his family was told he had only weeks to live.
Upon learning that Lynn wouldn’t have long to live, his 32-year-old daughter, Meredith Parnell, decided to fulfill her dream wedding dance with her dad, even though she wasn’t dating anyone at the time.
So on April 3, 2015, Meredith wore an elegant lace wedding gown and walked into her parent’s living room, where Lynn was waiting.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Lynn kissed Meredith’s hand before using all his strength to rise from the wheelchair. Meredith held her dad in her arms, and then the frail Lynn leaned forward as they launched into a heartbreaking father-daughter dance.
Time seemed to stand still as the father and daughter embraced tightly and silently swayed to John Mayer’s “Daughters.”
“That moment is priceless,” Meredith told Caters News. “He danced as long as he could before the strength ran out. What a gift.”
Sadly, Lynn drew his last breath two days later.
Though Lynn had passed away, Meredith was able to take comfort in the fact that her wedding dance with her dad was all caught on film.
“When my Dad and I were dancing, he told me how proud he was of me and how beautiful [I] looked—it became very much what it’d be like at my real wedding,” Meredith shared.
Three years later on Jan. 6, 2018, Meredith’s dream was realized when she incorporated this touching video on her wedding day for all the guests to see.
Lynn’s appearance on Meredith’s big day gave her “indescribable strength.”
“Having this moment to look back on is more incredible that I could ever put into words,” Meredith said.
